From 1780 to Today: A Living Legacy

Chapter I

Beginnings in 1780

1780 - 1852

On the slopes of Mutton Hill, in one of Westmoreland's earliest settlements, the farm was first laid out in 1780. The original homestead — a farmhouse, summer kitchen, and barns — rose from the land in that era, humble and resilient, each structure serving its part in daily life on the farm.

A grand center chimney once anchored the home's heart, drawing warmth into its core.

Then, in 1852, a "renewal" reshaped its heart: the original chimney was removed and replaced with two newer ones, and a hand pump plus cast-iron sink were added to bring water from a dug well behind the house.

Though the original farmhouse has since been lost to time, its legacy lives on in the barn that stood across the road — a structure that would one day be transformed into the home that carries the farm’s story forward.

"Each generation leaves its mark upon this land."

Chapter II

A Century of Stewardship

1852 – 1928

Through generations, the farm carried many names: Edson Farm, Forrest Hall Farm, and, most recently, the Richard White Farm.

Once alive with the hum of bees, the scent of fresh milk, and the rhythm of harvest, the farm’s story spans generations — a legacy of honey, dairy, grain, and maple that still lingers in the land surrounding the barn that remains today.

In the early 1950s, Richard White built a new red barn across the road from the old farmhouse — a barn that would later become the lasting heir to this property’s story when the original house was gone.

The Whites

Richard & Ruth White

September 1928

When Richard and Ruth White acquired the property in September 1928, they embraced its story as their own.

With their horse Prince, Richard worked the land, tapped maples, tended livestock, and cared for every corner of the farm — including the barn that would one day become the foundation of a new chapter in this property’s story.

Chapter III

A Distinguished Home

Today

Today, the farm has been reimagined — not erased. The red barn that Richard White built across the road in the early 1950s now stands as the heart of this remarkable home. What once stored hay and echoed with the sounds of horses has been transformed into a warm, modern residence — the only surviving structure from the working farm, and a living tribute to the land’s enduring story.
